BCATP   Charts

This download will give you a set of Aviation Charts from the 1940’s.  They stretch across Canada and cover all of the BCATP stations.  They are high resolution would be great for anyone wishing to fly the BCATP stations VFR.  Because of their high resolution the files are very large.  There are 38 charts and the total download is approximately 80mg

BCATP Overhead Photos

This download will give you a set of overhead photographs of many of the BCATP stations. Because of space limitations and download time we have reduced these in size but they still give a nice clear picture of the stations.  These photographs are used with permission of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum in Brandon, Manitoba.

Tiger Moth

De Havilland DH 82 Tiger Moth

The De Havilland Tiger Moth was designed, as a primary trainer for the RAF in 1931 and Model DH82 was to become the foremost aircraft design flown by the Commonwealth’s military and civilian pilots. The Tiger Moth made an enormous contribution to the BCATP and from 1938-1948 employed more than 1500 of these aircraft.

Yale

North American Yale

With the outbreak of WWII, the RCAF eventually acquired 119 Yale aircraft between August 1940 and September 1946. Assembley of the Yale in Canada was licensed to Norduyn in addition to their production of the Harvard and the Norseman. The Yale was similar to the Harvard , the most obvious difference being a fixed landing gear as opposed to the retractable undercarriage of the Harvard.

Stearman

Boeing PT-27 Stearman

The Boeing Stearman was manufactured as an initial training aircraft and eventually there were at least 8500 manufactured. No other biplane was ever built in this quantity. The RCAF’s 300 Model PT-27’s were ordered with special modifications for air training, particularly in Canada’s winter weather conditions.

PBY Canso

Consolidated PBY 5-A Canso

Consolidated’s first PGY flying-boat prototype made it’s maiden flight in 1933. During WWII Boeing Aircraft of Canada , Canadian Vickers and Canadair Ltd. Made almost 800 PBY’s in Canada. The RCAF called it’s version ‘Canso A’ – A for amphibious.

Harvard

North American Harvard

The Harvard became the standard advanced trainer for the BCATP in Canada and the RAF in Britain. It was used to train thousands of Commonwealth pilots for combat flying fighters and fighter-bombers. The RCAF kept the Harvard on strength as a trainer until 1966.

Cornell

Fairchild PT-26B Cornell

Fleet Aircraft Company of Canada built 1642 Cornells under license, and they were designed as either as PT-23’s or PT-26s. The RCAF selected the Cornell as a successor to the Tiger Moth and the Fleet Finch. The RCAF first flew the Cornell's in 1940 and retired the last one in 1947.

H Huts

“H” Huts

This picture is a screen shot in Microsoft’s Flight Simulator FS2004, of two buildings that were called “H” Huts, because of their shape. These buildings were plentiful on pretty well all of the BCATP bases. They were frames with wood and the siding was of wood shingles, painted green. These buildings would have had many uses, from men’s and officer’s quarters, to classrooms for training and administration.

 Hangar

BCATP Hangar

This picture is a screen shot in Microsoft’s Flight Simulator FS2004, of one of the hangars that would have been used on the BCATP Stations. These cantilever structures used either wood or steel construction, depending on what was available at that particular location. The siding was wood shingles painted.

#39 SFTS, Swift Current

No. 39 SFTS Swift Current, Saskatchewan

This is an aerial photograph of the BCATP Station at # 39 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) at Swift Current, Saskatchewan. . This Station was active from 16 May 1941 to 15 December 1941 to 24 March 1944. The aircraft flown here would have been the Airspeed Oxford.
